The Brand New GradeMate

Posted by Mike on February 2nd, 2010.

GradeMate went through a beautiful make-over today. We’ve spent the past six months improving the site functionality and look/feel of the application and we’re incredibly proud to release it to you. Changes and upgrades include a new Bookmarks feature, a brand new layout and user experience, enhanced and heavily updated security features, edit undo/redo in the Grades Manager, and a new view of your course pages.

And the fun doesn’t stop here! We’ll be making large improvements and additions to the service from now through the summer. Some additions include:

  1. Reporting tools for teachers and students
  2. Exporting and importing GradeMate courses and information
  3. Parent accounts and increased communication from Teacher <-> Parent <-> Student
  4. Blog pages, Project pages, and new, exciting ways to share and collaborate

We do all of this for you, for free, and would love your feedback and support. Don’t hesitate to send us bug reports and feature requests or let us know what you think of the web site!

  1. Awesome redesign!!

You guys must have put a lot of effort into this. The UI is a little complicated, but overall it’s very responsive and pretty intuitive. And the visual design just feels right. On every page.

    Great job!

note: “GradeMate Dashboard” displayed as the primary header on every page, even when I click on another menu item like “Courses”

Thanks David. We’re going through the UI in more detail for the next set of updated. If you think of anything or have any comments don’t hesitate to send them to me at mike@mygrademate.com.

I appreciate the updates. Nice Job!

Here’s one of my very favorite features. Sorry it takes a bit to explain it!

I don’t know if everyone knows you can change the colors of the courses that show up on the right side column (list) and also on the calendar! It’s one of my favorite features, and something I can’t live without now.

It’s great to look at the calendar and know by color what is the course work due on what days by the color you set up for that course.

For example – you could set up blue for Math. Red for English, and so on.

You are probably entering due dates for tests or papers for the math course. Everytime you add something for that course, it now shows up blue on the calendar.

What I find useful is adding those things you have to do in “advance” of a class, and seeing on a calendar that this research or study time or homework time is for Math. I know that everytime I see blue – it’s for math….

Once you set up the color one time for a course –
Anything you do for that course, such as to prepare for a paper, research, go to library, meet with teacher, study time, or tutoring time, – you add things you need to do to the calendar (as an assignment) – it will show up under that color on the calendar so you know it’s for that course.

However, it was a bit tricky for me to figure out how to change the colors of courses.

You don’t change the colors under courses, as I would have thought by editing the course pages. You change the course color under calendar settings.

You select the course under calendar settings and choose the color for that course by selecting the color, and from now on – anything related to that course shows up in that color!

It took me a bit to remember where to change the course colors, so hope this helps someone else.

It would be nice if the new design kept the dates on the calender.
